Bio:

Laurence Irwin Sugarman is Research Professor and Director of the Center for Applied Psychophysiology and Self-regulation (CAPS) in the College of Health Sciences and Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology; Clinical Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and a behavioral pediatrician at the Easter Seals Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Rochester, New York. After training in pediatrics at the University of Rochester he spent 26 years in community practice developing clinical strategies that effectively address psychobiological problems by helping children help themselves. Dr. Sugarman has achieved international recognition for his teaching and writing in the field of hypnosis and biofeedback with children. He is a Fellow, past Vice-President, and past Co-Director of Education with the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and Immediate Past President and current Vice-President of the American Board of Medical Hypnosis. With William Wester, Dr. Sugarman is the co-author/editor of Therapeutic Hypnosis with Children and Adolescents. His award-winning documentary Hypnosis in Pediatric Practice has received international acclaim. His current research foci include hypnosis and autonomic regulation training for young people with autism spectrum disorder, therapeutic interactive media, and the development of innovative models of psychobiological care.

Bart Walsh, MSW

Bio:

Bart Walsh, MSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. He has practiced in the Portland area since 1987, initially honing professional skills within the context of community mental health (Catholic Family Services) for seven years. He currently directs Affinity Counseling and Hypnosis as well as The Milton H. Erickson Institute of Portland. Bart has also been involved in the delivery of clinical services to the Kartini Clinic for Disordered Eating since 2003.

Bart’s orientation to counseling, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy is essentially a strengths perspective with a solution focus. The strengths perspective acknowledges all the strengths, resources and instinctual imperatives within an individual that have helped the individual get to the present moment. The strengths perspective helps scan for the resources needed to resolve or modify the concern that is brought to treatment.

The influences that guide Bart’s work and contribute to the strengths perspective have been derived from studies, experience or training in: systems theory, Jungian therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (direct from Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis), object relations theory, Ericksonian hypnotherapy, holotropic breath work (Stanislav Grof), narrative therapy (direct from Michael White), ego-state therapy, family therapy (direct from Carl Whitaker, Salvador Minuchin, Jay Haley & Cloe Madanes) solution focused therapy (Direct from Steve DeShazer & Insoo Kim Berg), music therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing and more.

In addition to direct clinical work with individuals, couples and families, Bart offers hypnotherapy training to qualified professionals through the M.H. Erickson Institute of Portland. Bart’s articles have been published in The American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis. His most recent book is entitled Emotional Regulation using Signals of Self. Bart presents trainings domestically and in Europe.

Joseph Sestito, MA

Joseph Sestito, MA

Bio:

Joseph’s received his Master’s degree in social science administration from Case Western Reserve University in 1992. Since that time he has largely practiced psychotherapy with children, adolescents, adults, and couples. His practice has evolved to the point where presently he divides his time between doing counseling and psychotherapy, coaching, professional and popular writing. Additionally, he has immersed himself in life coaching, writers coaching, and coaching/psychotherapy with individuals who are struggling with chronic pain, and autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. However, throughout his vocation a theme has been working with children and adolescents in a highly efficient, healing manner; he is often told that a child or adolescent has seen 3 to 5 therapists previously, with little or no results. Yet with Joseph’s experienced utilization of Ericksonian therapy (he began to master it beginning with his first Intensive in 1995 at the MHEF, where he learned from Drs. Geary, Zeig, and Rossi), combined with EMDR, clients are often practically symptom-free within a dozen sessions, or fewer. He finds great joy in this rapid alleviation of suffering. He has done five, or more, previous short courses. He has conducted full-day workshops for PESI, as well as doing week long intensive’s for the Cape Cod Institute, as well as other sponsors. He has authored three professional books, the first of which was released from Watkins Publishing (London, England). His fourth book will be released by Guilford, and has the same title as this short course. Finally, he is eager to share this integrative method with the attendees of his short course at the upcoming Ericksonian Congress (December, 2019).

Terry Soo-Hoo, PhD, ABPP

Bio:

Terry Soo-Hoo, PhD, ABPP is the Clinical Director of MRI in Palo Alto, and professor at the California State University East Bay in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program. His publications include topics on multi-cultural issues in psychotherapy and consultation, brief therapy and couples therapy. He has special interests in the area of innovative culturally relevant approaches to psychotherapy. He has also provided extensive presentations, training, supervision and consultation on these topics to agencies and other professionals in many countries around the world. Dr. Soo- Hoo is Board Certified in Family and Couples Psychology (ABPP).

After studying science (Chemistry and food science) at university, I devoted my career to teaching in different contexts; from high school to master’s degree levels. Once I considered I had what I considered enough science knowledge and teaching experience, I started studying psychology and psychotherapy. The reason I started this new approach in my career was because my previous studies in hypnosis made a profound impression on me, so that, I devoted myself in using hypnosis through psychotherapy to promote change and healing in others. My goal was closer when I finished my master’s degree studies in psychotherapy and Ericksonian hypnosis in the Madrid Ericksonian Institue (Milton Erickson Foundation) with Teresa García among names like Betty Alice Erickson, Roxanna Erickson, Norma Barretta Phd, Steven Gilligan Phd, Dan Short Phd, Brent Geary Phd and other people I had admire for years.

I am currently part of the teacher staff at the Madrid Ericksonian Institue (Milton Erickson Foundation) and I am profoundly proud of being able to help promote Ericksonian Psychotherapy. I also have my own private practice in psychotherapy and hypnosis in Madrid.

Bio:

Michael D. Reiter received his PhD in Family Therapy and has been a licensed marriage and family therapist for 20 years. He is Professor of Family Therapy at Nova Southeastern University, Clinical Member of AAMFT, and a AAMFT Approved Supervisor. He studied from Insoo Kim Berg as well as spent 10 years working closely with Dr. Salvador Minuchin, having co-authored a book with him. Dr. Reiter has presented about psychotherapy at local, national, and international conferences. He has written 19 peer reviewed journals as well as 9 books. His books have been translated into Chinese, Korean, Italian, and Polish.

Bio:

Dr. Mitra Rashidian is an internationally recognized speaker in the area of sexual health care and cross-cultural sexuality. The results of her research have been published in notable scientific journals. She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling from the University of New England (UNE), School of Health, in Australia. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice, located in Encino California. She is a Certified Sexologist through The American College of Sexologists International, and is an Honorary Adjunct Faculty member at the School of Health, UNE since 2014; Plus, she is a research member of the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) in Australia. She completed her fellowship, where she led her research projects that included the University of New England, School of Health, Australia; University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, USA; Loma Linda University, School of Health, USA, with the research focus on sexual health and mental well-being. She has presented her research findings both nationally and internationally, in places such as The Milton H. Erickson Foundation (Brief Therapy), USA, UNE, The American Counseling Associations (ACA), The American – Canadian Counseling Associations (, and the World Congress For Sexual Health (WAS), Glasgow, United Kingdom, and The University of Ewha, South Korea. Carlos Ramos, PhD

Carlos Ramos, PhD in MFT

Bio:

Dr. Ramos earned his BA in psychology from Florida International University, his Masters in Movement Science from Barry University, and his PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University. As a board certified behavior analyst, Dr. Ramos worked with the foster care population in South Florida for approximately ten years. He also specializes in medical family therapy, in which he incorporates relational hypnosis in the treatment of a wide range of clinical problems. Trained as a post-modern therapist, his theoretical orientation is grounded in Ericksonian and systemic concepts. Dr. Ramos’s research interests include systemic approaches, clinical hypnosis, single-session therapy, supervision and training, multicultural therapy, and qualitative research. He is an assistant professor in the psychology department at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. Dr. Ramos is also the program co-director of the MS in Psychology with a Concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy, and the certificate co-director of Psychological Services for Spanish Speaking Populations.

Bio:

Susan Pinco, PhD, LCSW is in private in NYC and teaches internationally, offering courses in powerful, somatically-informed, treatment modalities that bridge the gap between mind and body. Susan is an ASCH certified Hypnotherapist, an EMDR certified consultant, and a certified BrainSpotting (BSP) consultant and presenter. Gabrielle is a General Practitioner with 28 years experience, the last 16y specialising in Mental Health. She is in private practice in Hobart, Tasmania and teaches counselling skills to medical students at The University of Tasmania.
